Tanzania assures AU unwavering cooperation in promoting peace, security

DODOMA: TANZANIA is committed to collaborate with all African countries to promote security and peace, especially in fulfilling its leadership role as the chair of the Africa Union’s Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation in a statement unveiled to the media assured all African countries that through collaboration with them, Tanzania in its one-month tenure will deliver to their expectations.

According to the ministry, the country assumed the AU-PSC’s post on May 1st this year and its expiry date will be May 31st this year.

The statement elaborated that within the month, the AU-PSC will mark the 20th anniversary since its establishment in May 2004 by reflecting achievements, pressing challenges and way forward.

Detailing others series of events which will decorate Tanzania’s chairmanship in celebrating the 20th anniversary, the ministry stated that the first week involved mediation and discussions, the second one concentrate on humanitarian assistances, peace and security and the third leg will focus on women, youths, peace and security.

Furthermore, the fourth week will dwell on children protection and the fifth on supporting security and peace missions, read the statement.

The climax of the anniversary is scheduled on May 25th this year in Dar es Salaam under the theme “20 Years of the AU PSC as a Standing Decision-Making Organ: The Next 2 Decades of the Peace and Security We Want in Africa.”

According to the ministry, President Samia will lead other Heads of State and Government in marking the 20th anniversary alongside leaders of Gambia and Uganda, which are member states of the Troika Council for May 2024.

According to the ministry, other leaders who will attend the anniversary ceremony are Mauritania President Mr Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, who doubles as the AU’s Chairperson as well as the AU’s Commission Chairperson Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat.

The statement further said in May 24 this year, prior to the 20th anniversary climax, AU-PSC at diplomatic level involving ambassadors will come up with a declaration to be presented at the ceremony.

On top of that, Tanzania in collaboration with AU-PSC’s secretariat will organise a symposium at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) as the platform for collecting opinions from participants, which will be encompassed to its declaration.

In another development, the ministry said that the anniversary concurrently will be accompanied with the open meeting in May 15th this year, involving ambassadors, to discuss the protocol that led to the birth of the AU-PSC.

According to the ministry, the ambassadors will on May 20, 2024 also discuss the joint-statement about the process of returning democratic governments in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Gabon which are under military rule.

The diplomats further will highlight means for ending illicit trade of small arms and light weapons, read the statement.

Over the weekend, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and the Permanent Representative to AU, Mr Innocent Shiyo told the ‘Daily News’ that on May 25 this year during the grand celebration of 20th anniversary, President Samia will give a keynote address.

Moreover, Mr Shiyo said the grant ceremony will be featured by unveiling PSC’s e-Anniversary Logo.

More significantly, he said AU-PSC will receive a statement from the chairperson of AU’s Commission and Mr António Guterres, UN Secretary General.

He also said at the end of the programme, the council will adopt a solemn declaration on its 20 years.

It should be recalled that during the 10th anniversary, the AU-PSC adopted a declaration which among others emphasised the need for enhanced cooperation with other stakeholders in conflict prevention, management and resolutions.

AU-PSC became operational in early 2004 following the adoption of the protocol relating to the establishment of Peace and Security Council of AU in July 2002 in Durban, South Africa and entered in to force in December 2003.

The council started its activities on March 16, 2004 and held its official launch on May 25, 2004 which is also the African Union Day.
