GEITA: The provision of food to pupils in schools has been highlighted as a crucial measure in reducing absenteeism, according to Dr. Charles Msonde, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government (RALG).
Speaking at the launch of the 2024 Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) organized by TEN/MET and other stakeholders in Geita region, Dr. Msonde emphasized the importance of ensuring that learners have access to food.
He noted that despite the region not facing food shortages, absenteeism remains high.
Dr. Msonde urged the implementation of reliable food provision methods, stating that when students see their peers eating at school, it encourages them to attend classes.
He emphasized that addressing absenteeism through school feeding programs can also help tackle other educational challenges, such as low literacy and numeracy rates.
Ms. Martha Makala, the National Coordinator of TEN/MET, echoed Dr. Msonde’s sentiments, expressing the organization’s commitment to collaborating with the government to improve the education sector.
She praised the government’s efforts in enhancing infrastructure, such as classrooms, and emphasized the need to focus on improving the quality of education nationwide.
The 2024 GAWE is being celebrated under the theme “Transformative Inclusive Quality Education for All,” with its culmination scheduled for Friday at the same venue. This underscores the collective effort to ensure that education is accessible and beneficial to all students, with measures such as school feeding programs playing a crucial role in achieving this goal.
