TEN/MET urges companies operating in Geita to support schools

GEITA: Companies operating around Geita Gold Mine in Geita region have been urged to play a role in supporting schools surrounding their localities through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

TEN/MET National Coordinator Ms Martha Makala made the call on Tuesday during a visit at Mgusu Secondary School and Mshikamano Primary School both situated at Mgusu Ward in the region.

“I heard that this area is surrounded by many mining companies…I would like to urge them to use the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in supporting these schools.

“For instance, here at Mgusu Secondary School, they are in need of a hostel and classroom blocks of which such companies can contribute part of their profit towards achieving this target,” she said.

On her part, Region Adult Education Officer Ms Salome Cherehani noted that aside high cases of absenteeism, the other challenge facing Mgusu Ward is that most children are disabled as a result of the contamination of mercury which is used to clean minerals.

“You find that a mother takes her child to the mining field and while there, they are exposed to mercury as most of them do not use required protective gears.

“As such, when they eat anything, part of the chemicals get access into the body thereby affecting normal functioning of the body,” she said.

On how to deal with the challenge, she proposed that awareness is very important to parents and those who work in the mining sector.

Geita region is hosting this year’s Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) whose official launching was on Monday and its climax is on Friday at CCM Kalangala ground in the region.
