Simba, Azam lock horns

ZANZIBAR: THE Tanzania Union Super League (Muungano Cup) will see Simba and Azam face off for the top honour today at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar, after a 20-year hiatus.

After the long pause, the league is back in action, with two teams from Tanzania Mainland and two from Zanzibar. Included were Simba and Azam from the Mainland, while from Zanzibar were KVZ and KMKM.

Simba and KVZ faced off in the league’s opening match on Wednesday, Simba winning 2-0. The first meeting was followed by a second one between Azam and KMKM that ended with Azam defeating KMKM 5-2.

Ahead of today’s match Simba Assistant Coach, Selemani Matola, stated that facing Azam in today’s final is an honour and that they are prepared for the matchup.

“We hold Azam in high regard; they are formidable foes who have won by a significant margin in the past, so they should not be taken lightly.

“But, despite all that, we are in good shape and people should be ready to witness a classic battle between the two teams and the one with a bit of luck tomorrow (today) will win the title,” Matola stated.

Azam Coach, Youssouph Dabo, emphasised that although it will be a close match, victory over Simba is what will determine their prospects of winning the title.

“Our mission here is to win the title, and to achieve that we had to defeat KMKM of which we succeeded and now we are facing Simba.

“Of course, it will be a difficult game, even though our opponents as you said, are going through a tough period…they (Simba) are a big team and I expect a tense match.

“Our first meeting this season was in the Premier League, which ended 1-1 in Mwanza but this time around, we are meeting in the final, and here only one team should win to clinch the trophy.

“I hope that we are going to emerge winners and walk away with the title,” said Dabo who is still waiting for his first silverware at the helm of the club.

After meeting in Zanzibar, the duo will lock horns in the Premier League on May 9th at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, battling for essential three points.
